Maitland Regional Art Gallery is a free public gallery in the Maitland CBD, at the eastern gateway to the valley and about half an hour by train from Newcastle. The collection runs past seven thousand works by Australian and international artists, shown across several spaces alongside touring exhibitions and an arts-health program. Seraphine Cafe at the rear does breakfast and lunch from 8am to 2pm and is licensed, with a focus on local wine and produce.
For families there are self-directed art trails, and reception keeps a sensory bag, a visual schedule and a social script for anyone who wants to know what to expect before walking in. Admission is free and the gallery opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm, closed Mondays and public holidays. It sits at the Maitland end of the region, so it pairs with a day exploring that side rather than a Pokolbin one.
