The Hunter is where Australian wine tourism began, and it still does the day trip better than most. Around two hours north of Sydney, its cellar doors sit close together across Pokolbin and the valleys around it, so you can taste at several in a day without long drives between them.
Semillon is the signature: taut and low in alcohol young, then remarkable with a decade in the bottle. Shiraz is the red to seek out, earthier and more medium-bodied than the bigger styles further south. Plenty of cellar doors pair tastings with a restaurant, a cheese room, or a garden, which makes it easy to build a day that is about more than just wine.
Getting around is the part that catches people out. Tasting and driving do not mix, and you should not rely on an on-demand taxi pickup once you leave the main cluster. Pre-book any transfer and confirm the address and return time. The local hop-on hop-off shuttle follows a published circuit through the Pokolbin area. Check every chosen stop against the operator’s current timetable, because the planner does not constrain a day to that route.
