Broke is west of the main Pokolbin cluster, out where the valley flattens onto the plains along Wollombi Brook, below the Yellow Rock cliffs of the Brokenback Range. It’s quieter than Pokolbin and more spread out, and it takes a short drive to reach, so it suits a slower day with less traffic.
Most of the wineries are small and family-run, many planted in the 1980s and 1990s. Shiraz, Chardonnay and Semillon are the main grapes. Margan has a hatted restaurant next to its cellar door, which makes it the obvious place to stop for lunch out this way.
The stops are further apart than in Pokolbin, so decide your order before you leave and work out how you’ll get home. A lot of the accommodation around Broke is on the vineyards themselves, so staying overnight is a simple way to avoid driving after tastings.
