Margan farms about 90 hectares at Broke, much of it on the red volcanic clay of the Fordwich Sill, and every wine is estate grown and made by Andrew Margan. The old Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay blocks date from the late 1960s. Barbera, Albarino, Mourvedre and Cabernet Franc are family plantings, still uncommon in the Hunter. It works as a farm as much as a cellar door, certified with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, the first in the region, with a kitchen garden, orchard, olive groves and estate-reared lambs feeding the kitchen.
The cellar door is open seven days, 10am to 5pm, with light platters of cheese, charcuterie and house-baked bread from the garden. Lunch in the rammed-earth restaurant has run Thursday to Monday since 2007, and the Ultimate Margan Experience adds a guided walk through the market garden, vineyard and winery before you sit down. Margan does not publish a tasting price, so call the cellar door before you go. Three-time Hunter Valley Cellar Door of the Year, it looks out on the Brokenback Range from the terrace.
