Whispering Brook planted Arinto and Touriga Nacional at Broke in the Hunter's first serious go at Portuguese varieties, and they are still the reason to make the detour out to Broke Fordwich. Tastings are seated on a wide covered verandah over the vines, the olive groves and the national park behind them, and the estate presses its own olive oil to taste alongside the wine.

The 40-minute Discovery flight is $20, the signature hour opens six or seven wines for $30, and the chocolate flight pairs each glass with a handmade Cocoa Nib chocolate chosen to mirror it. For more there is a fireside Portuguese tasting with aged tawny and library vintages at $95. The cellar door opens Thursday to Saturday and takes appointments on other days, there is a cubby house to keep children busy, and the guesthouse in the vineyard sleeps up to eighteen. It is one of the region's more distinctive lists, well worth the drive.
