Running Horse is a thoroughbred stud and a vineyard on the same rocky ground at Broke Fordwich, and the wines are made to be drunk old. Yields are kept tiny, about half a tonne an acre off the Shiraz, and a vintage that will not age is simply not picked, so what is poured is Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay and Shiraz with a decade or more behind it.
Winemaker David Fromberg pours them himself, looking out over Yellow Rock and the Broke Fordwich valley, and will walk you through the vineyard and the winemaking if you ask. There are no set opening hours and the site is mid-rebuild, so email ahead to arrange a tasting rather than turning up. It is the opposite of a slick cellar door, and that is the appeal: a working farm where the person pouring made the wine and grew the fruit. Prices are not published, so ask when you book.
