Established1987

Wine has been a De Iuliis family business for four generations, and the Pokolbin estate began when Joss De Iuliis bought a 20-hectare grazing block in 1987 and spent three years rebuilding the soil before planting Semillon and Chardonnay. Mike De Iuliis has made the wine ever since, and Shiraz is what the place is known for, with Montepulciano among the less usual plantings. It was named Hunter Valley Cellar Door of the Year in 2022.

Tastings open at $15 for the Made by Mike flight of eight wines, and step up through a $30 single-vineyard tasting to the $55 Limited Release Shiraz vertical, back across the 2019, 2016, 2014 and 2009 vintages. The $65 DeLuxe adds a two-hour winery tour and a cheese plate. The cellar door is open seven days, 10am to 5pm. If you want to stay, the Winemakers House sits 30 metres away, sleeps seven and takes dogs, with a premium tasting included for guests.
