Thomas Allen has been on Broke Road since 2009, but the partnership behind it goes back to 1983, when Steve and Craig met working at Hermitage winery. Both spent decades making wine around the Hunter before starting their own, and Craig also worked a year in Champagne and Bordeaux, which shows in the way the place thinks about its wines.
Tastings are by appointment rather than walk-in, which means a small room and a long conversation instead of a queue at a bar, so complete the request form before you visit. The wines, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Cabernet, go into cork rather than screwcap, a deliberate choice the pair will happily argue about with you. It opens six days, closed Tuesday, 10am to 5pm. It is a stop for people who want to talk about wine at length with whoever made it, not to tick off a bar.
