Leogate works the old Len Evans vineyard on Broke Road, restored since 2008 by Bill and Vicki Widin. The wines to know are the Brokenback range, powerful Hunter Shiraz alongside Semillon and Chardonnay, poured in a large cellar door with fireside tastings in winter and alfresco flights facing the ranges in summer.
The Brokenback Tasting is $10 for six wines over about an hour, the Reserve $20, and a $45 canape menu runs seven wines with matched bites. For $50 a behind-the-scenes tour walks the crush, tanks and barrel room before a tasting. The cellar door opens Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, and bookings are essential. Beyond the bar the estate runs to twenty villas and the three-bedroom Gatehouse cottage, so it works as a base as much as a stop. The vineyards are sustainably farmed, and the range spreads into a Tempranillo, a Cabernet and a couple of sparklings alongside the Brokenback flagships.
