Oakvale has made wine at the base of the Brokenback Range for close to 120 years, and since the Becker family took it on the winemaking has run on minimal intervention: spontaneous ferments, unfined and vegan-friendly wines, with fruit off the certified-organic Ablington vineyard. The range is wide, taking in Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Viognier alongside the Hunter staples.

The cellar door opens every day from 10am and the general tasting is $10 a head, with every cent of it funding wine made for Meals on Wheels; more than 75,000 piccolos have gone that way so far. A comparisons tasting runs styles side by side, from sparkling to sweet. Elliotts at Oakvale opens earlier, from 8am, for coffee, breakfast over the vines, lunch and afternoon grazing boards. Dogs are welcome, groups are capped at twelve, and there is a Tesla charger at the cellar door. It closes only on Christmas Day and opens from midday on Anzac Day, so it is one of the easier stops to fit into a public-holiday weekend.
