David Hook works the Pothana vineyard at Belford, off the main Pokolbin tourist strip, on a site the family planted in the early 1980s. The list runs from Hunter Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz into a set of Italian and alternative varieties the valley rarely grows, among them Vermentino, Barbera, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. Tastings are seated and booked ahead, held outside overlooking the old-vine Chardonnay block, so this is a stop to plan rather than pass on the way through. The cellar door sits at the winery itself, which is part of the appeal.

It opens weekends from 10.30am, and a seated tasting is around $15 a head. Belford is a short run north-west of the Pokolbin core, close enough to add without unravelling a day built around the central wineries. Book before you go, since the door is not always staffed for walk-ins.
