Black Creek Farm sits on an easterly slope off Old North Road at Rothbury, and Theleme is the label made from its single vineyard. Nadine and Jean Brochut built the cellar door into a rustic farmhouse, French provincial in feel, with a large open fireplace inside and balconies looking down the vine rows.
The range is small and made to age: dry Semillon going back to 2013, Chardonnay, a Rose, Shiraz and a Cabernet Merlot. No tasting price is published, so ask when you book. It opens Friday through Monday, about eight minutes from Hunter Valley Gardens, and the family asks you to phone ahead, partly because they close now and then for private events. It is a quiet, fireside sort of cellar door rather than a busy bar, and the aged Semillon is the reason to seek it out.
