Piggs Peake is a boutique winery on Hermitage Road that makes bold wines from vineyards dating back to the 1800s, and names nearly all of them after pigs. Steve Langham has run the place since the 2003 vintage, and the range is deliberately wide: Nebbiolo, Lagrein, Sagrantino and Durif alongside Hunter Semillon, Verdelho and Shiraz.

The $32 tasting runs about an hour, is capped at six people, and comes back to you as credit against any bottle on the tasting list, so the fee effectively disappears if you buy. Ned's Cafe and Bar shares the courtyard for coffee, cocktails and a grazing menu, and takes walk-ins, which makes it easy to turn a tasting into a longer sit. The cellar door opens seven days, 10am to 5pm, with the last tasting booking at 4pm. If the alternative reds are what you are chasing, this is one of the region's better lists for them.
