Established2001

Peter Drayton is a fifth-generation Hunter winemaker who built this Pokolbin estate from scratch in 2001, and his background in civil engineering shows: the winery, the brewhouse, the kitchen and the chapel all went up on site. It is one of the few Hunter cellar doors where a tasting can be wine, gin or a beer paddle, because IronBark Hill Brewing Co and the Wildstreak still both work here. The wine range is broad, with Fiano, Vermentino, Sangiovese, Barbera and Graciano planted alongside Semillon and Shiraz.

Wine tastings are $10 and come off the price of a bottle, and Wildstreak Kitchen runs share plates through the middle of the day, with wood-fired pizza Friday to Sunday. The cellar door opens Wednesday to Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday, so it is one to plan a midweek trip around. If you want to stay, IronBark Hill Retreat sleeps up to ten with a pool and tennis court, and there are one and two-bedroom villas among the vines, all a short walk from the cellar door.
