The Parched Crow pours from a newly renovated cellar door on Tarin Grove Estate, a De Beyers Road property with cattle paddocks running up to the vine rows. Miner and farmer Ross Crump and his partner Lisa Hugo run the place and make single-vineyard wine, and the range is wider than most small Hunter labels: Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Vermentino, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Shiraz, a rose, two sparklings and a Muscat.

The $10 tasting runs about an hour at timber tables on the verandah looking out over the property, and gingham picnic rugs are stacked by the door for anyone who wants to take a glass onto the lawn. For longer there is Picnic in the Pasture, a two-hour set-up with a bottle and a cheese and charcuterie box for $100. It opens Friday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. It is a relaxed, farm-side stop with more varieties on the list than the size of the place would suggest.
