Tamburlaine was established in 1966 and bought in 1985 by a group led by Mark Davidson, who has made every vintage since 1986 around what the winery calls Contemporary Organics. Its Hunter and Orange vineyards are certified organic or in conversion, audited each year by Southern Cross Certified, and since 2016 no animal fining agents have been used, so the range is vegan-friendly. That range is unusually wide for the Hunter: alongside Shiraz, Chardonnay and Cabernet you will find Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvedre and Malbec.
The Pokolbin cellar door opens 9am to 5pm every day of the year bar Christmas. Tastings are seated and start low, with the Winemaker's Discovery flight at $10 and the Trophy tasting at $20, plus a $5 non-alcoholic flight built for the driver. There is no kitchen on site, but cheese and salami boxes come with the tastings, including gluten-free and vegan options. On a weekday morning the Vines to Wines tour leaves at 9:30am and walks the organic vineyard and winery before you taste, for $75.
