Established1970

Brokenwood has poured in Pokolbin since 1970, and it built its name on Semillon and Shiraz. Tastings run around individual pods rather than a shared bar, and the $25 Taste Experience covers seven premium and single-vineyard wines in about 45 minutes. Its reserve and single-vineyard labels headline the list, among them the ILR Reserve Semillon and the flagship Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz. There is wine-show history behind it too, including a President's Medal from the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW.

Food is a real reason to time a visit. The Wood serves lunch Friday to Tuesday, so a tasting can run into a long one, and the Terrace Wine Bar opens seven days. If you would rather be led, the $75 Match Experience is a seated flight with canapes, and the $300 Cellar to Table tour takes in the barrel hall before lunch. Two things to plan around: the cellar door is strictly ages 18 and over, and it is cashless. It sits on the hop-on wine shuttle route, so you can leave the car where it is and still taste.
