McGuigan runs a large, recently renovated cellar door in the Roche Estate precinct on Broke Road, and the family has taken multiple International Winemaker of the Year titles at the International Wine and Spirit Competition. The house style is built on classic Hunter Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay across a wide spread of prices, from the everyday Bin 9000 Semillon and Black Label Shiraz up to the small-batch Handmade range. You can taste right across those tiers without much ceremony.
Walk up to the central bar for a complimentary tasting, or book the $10 Guided Wine Tasting, an hour through the cellar highlights. For more, there is a VIP private tasting and Hunter Through The Ages, a back-vintage flight of the estate's most-awarded Hunter wines. The cellar door opens seven days, 10am to 5pm, closed only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. It sits on the wine shuttle route and takes coaches and groups, which makes it a straightforward first stop before the smaller rooms.
