The Beckers started making wine on California's Mendocino Coast in 2008 and brought the operation home to the Hunter in 2017, so the list runs Australian and Californian bottlings side by side, which is not something you will find on the next road over. Fruit for the Hunter wines comes almost entirely from the Ablington Vineyard in the heart of Pokolbin, more than 100 metres above sea level.
A tasting is $10 a head at the Broke Road cellar door, which trades Sunday to Thursday from 10am to 6pm, so it is a useful option on the quieter early-week days when a lot of small rooms are shut. Spirits are poured alongside the wines, and the range keeps to Shiraz, Semillon and Chardonnay on the Hunter side. It is a genuinely different stop, and the trans-Pacific angle is worth the visit if you have tasted the local classics to death.
