Five generations of the Tyrrell family have made wine at this Pokolbin estate since 1858, and Edward Tyrrell's original ironbark slab hut from that year still stands on the property. Tastings are guided and run at five set times through the day, starting at 10am and finishing at 3pm. The $15 Cellar Door Tasting is an hour through a selected list; the $60 Premium adds the Single Vineyard and Winemaker's Selection wines, including the Vat 1 Semillon that Tyrrell's calls Australia's most awarded white.
The family helped pioneer Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Australia, and the Sacred Sites range draws on old ground like the Old Patch Shiraz, from vines planted in 1867. For $450 the Sacred Sites Experience is a private, two-and-a-half-hour tour and tasting for small groups. If you would rather keep it simple, buy a bottle and settle into the picnic grounds, which have a BBQ, shaded tables and EV charging. Dogs are welcome on the grounds, though not inside the cellar door during tastings.
