Hunter Distillery bills itself as Pokolbin's original distillery, a family operation four generations into the trade, making gin, vodka and a range of liqueurs and schnapps on site from natural ingredients. The tasting is a test-tube flight: six 4ml pours across the range for $10 a head, taking about forty-five minutes. The Silk almond liqueur, named for the family's youngest daughter, is both vegan-friendly and gluten-free. Groups are welcome up to twenty.
The Distillery Door is open seven days from 10am to 5pm, so unlike several of the valley's spirit makers it takes walk-ins rather than bookings only. No open alcohol is permitted on site, worth knowing if you are moving between stops. Spirit Club members taste free with a guest and get a twice-yearly six-bottle pack at 15% off. It sits on Broke Road among the Pokolbin cellar doors, an easy short stop between wineries.
