Small Mouth is a family-run distillery counter in the Hunter Valley Gardens shopping village at Pokolbin, making vodka, gin and liqueurs in small batches. Its signature is edible glitter suspended in every bottle, which sets the drink shimmering once you top it with anything fizzy. Flavour leads the range over botanical restraint, with the counter's top sellers a passionfruit vodka, a caramel vodka, and watermelon and espresso liqueurs. The bottles are as much the point as what is in them.
Tastings at the counter are free, which makes it an easy, low-commitment stop and a good source of a novelty bottle to take home. The distillery opens daily from 10am to 5pm in Shop 20 off Broke Road, though it takes some finding inside the village, so follow the signs from the car park. Spirits are for over-18s. Pair it with the gardens or the village's other shops rather than building an afternoon around it.
