The Sir Edgeworth David Memorial Museum holds the Coalfields Heritage Group's collection in the Abermain School of Arts, about five thousand items in all. Mining gear, farm implements, military memorabilia, radios, photographs, maps and Aboriginal artefacts fill the display rooms, and the local history library keeps family and mining records for anyone tracing the coalfields. The group started the collection in 1971 in the old Pokolbin schoolhouse at Kurri Kurri and later moved it here.
Entry is $5 a person, or $20 for a family of four or more, with EFTPOS accepted and parking behind the building including accessible spaces. It sits at Abermain, closer to Cessnock than the Pokolbin cellar doors, so it works as a stop for a wet afternoon or for anyone with local roots to chase. Opening days are not published on the museum's own site, so ring before you go.
