Hunter Valley Wildlife Park keeps more than two hundred animals on Lomas Lane at Nulkaba, a short run from Cessnock, and three walk-through habitats put you in among the kangaroos, wallabies and lorikeets. The day runs to a printed timetable: a lion encounter at 9.30, giraffe feeding at 10, then meerkats, lemurs, quokkas, capybara and squirrel monkeys through the middle of the day. Keeper-guided encounters, booked separately, take you inside the enclosure and let the animal decide how close it comes.

Entry is $49 for adults and $29 for children aged three to fifteen, with under-twos free and 10 percent off when you book online, and a bag of feed cones for the kangaroos is $7.50. A cafe and marquee serve hot food and barista coffee, with picnic tables under cover and by the water. It is open 9am to 4pm daily with last tickets at 3pm, and it is wheelchair accessible with a grassed play area, so it suits families for a good half-day.
