Hunter Valley Horse Riding and Adventures is a family-run farm on Talga Road at Rothbury that has put visitors on horses for about thirty years, and it is an easy half-day break from cellar doors. Rides are graded by length rather than skill: ten minutes for tiny tots on a led pony at $40, thirty minutes through the paddocks at $80, an hour at $110 or ninety minutes at $150 out into the bushland trails, and a sunset ride at $195. Helmets are provided and no experience is needed.
Pony rides take children from age three with a parent alongside, while the trail rides start older, and there is a weight limit to check when you book. The farm also has villas, a cabin, a homestead and camping and caravan sites if you want to stay on. Rides run by booking, weekends and school holidays fill early, and a ride may be moved in heavy rain, storms or extreme heat.
