Hunter Valley Gardens is a 14-hectare display garden on Broke Road at Pokolbin, laid out as ten themed sections joined by walking paths. Bill and Imelda Roche built it over four years with a team of landscape gardeners, architects and engineers, and a visit is mostly a self-guided wander past waterfalls, statuary and flower beds. It is open seven days, 9am to 5pm, with last entry at 4pm.

The site carries more than the gardens. Children's rides including a carousel, ferris wheel and superslide, an Aqua Golf and mini-golf area, several licensed dining venues and a shopping village all share the grounds. Large seasonal events, the Christmas Lights and the winter Snow Time programming among them, are ticketed separately from garden entry, so check what is on before you go. Parking is free, and it suits a family or a group happy to spend a couple of hours out of the car.
