Elfin Hill is a vineyard stay on Marrowbone Road in the Pokolbin foothills, at the base of the Brokenback range, with rooms that run from a king studio to a self-contained loft villa. Each has a private veranda looking across the vines, an ensuite and reverse-cycle air conditioning. It has been taking guests since 1972, when a cattle farm on the hillside became one of the first vineyard stays in the Hunter.
The Pavilion is what sets it apart from a motel: a shared indoor and outdoor space by the pool and barbecue, with a commercial kitchen guests can use and the best of the view at sunset. It is family run, and set up as much for a group taking several rooms as for a couple. Bookings and check-in are handled by phone and email rather than a front desk.
