Established1921

Mount Pleasant is where Maurice O'Shea made his name from 1921, and it stays a serious address for Hunter Semillon and Shiraz on Marrowbone Road. The old-vine holdings are the story here. The Mothervine Pinot Noir comes off what is reckoned Australia's oldest Pinot vineyard, planted in 1921, and the Old Hill Shiraz from vines put in beneath the Brokenback Range in 1880. Semillon runs alongside, led by the long-ageing Lovedale from its single vineyard.

Visits are guided and priced in tiers. The $25 Discovery Tasting covers the Estate Range with olives and lavosh, the $45 Signature adds cheese, and above those sit back-vintage Heritage flights, the rare Icons wines at $175, and the three-hour Mothervine Experience at $200 with a historic vineyard walk and winery tour. It suits people who want to taste with some depth rather than tick off a bar. The cellar door opens seven days, 10am to 5pm, bookings recommended, and children, pets and groups are all welcome.
