Ivanhoe's tasting room looks out over an 80-acre vineyard on Marrowbone Road to the Brokenback Range, and the late-afternoon slot is the one worth booking for the light on the hills. The house style runs to bold Shiraz and crisp Semillon, with Verdelho, Chambourcin, Chardonnay and Cabernet alongside, all from an independent, family-owned estate.
Seated tastings are $15 a head, and the premium flight and the cheese masterclass, matched with Hunter Belle cheese, are $45. Bookings are kept small, capped at four guests for the seated and masterclass sittings, so it is a considered stop rather than a quick bar. The wines are not in bottle shops: the cellar door, the website and the member list are the only ways to buy them. Parking on site is free, and the room opens daily, 10am to 5pm.
