Established2001

Degen is the smallest commercial vineyard in the Lower Hunter, run by the family whose name is on the label. Thomas and Jean Degen planted the block on Deasys Road in September 2001 and opened the cellar door in 2013, and they grow Shiraz, Chardonnay and Semillon, made as single-vineyard wines with Hunter winemakers.

Every tasting is seated, hosted by a family member and booked in advance at a set time, so this is a stop to plan rather than stumble into. The Petite is $10 for three wines over 20 minutes; the $15 Single Vineyard runs seven wines with a plate of chocolate, cheese, olives and smoked trout. There is a kids' version at $10 with hot chocolate and a snack plate, which is rare in the valley, and Vine Stay accommodation on the same 54-acre property for larger groups. It opens Friday to Sunday, with a maximum of ten per booking.
