Gartelmann was founded at Lovedale in 1996 by Jan and Jorg Gartelmann and is now run by chef and restaurateur Matt Dillow. Tastings start at $10 for a set of eight wines and run up to a 90-minute blending masterclass, where you build a Bordeaux-style red or a Hunter white and learn why the components sit together. There is also a chocolate and fortified tasting matched to chocolates made for the estate by a local chocolatier.
An extended tasting of twelve wines is $15 over an hour, and group tastings of eight run daily between 10am and 3pm. The Deck Cafe adjoins the cellar door and serves tapas over the bush setting, and a one-bedroom studio on the 20-acre property takes a couple and their dog. The cellar door opens seven days, from 9am on weekdays. Its 2024 Lisa Reserve Chardonnay took the trophy for best 2024 Chardonnay at the 2025 Hunter Valley Boutique Wine Show.
