deCapel is a hand-planted family vineyard at Lovedale that pours in a restored dairy, which keeps tastings small and personal. The plantings went in by hand in 2008 and the fruit is still picked by hand each vintage by family and friends, going into Semillon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, a Rose and a sparkling Semillon Verdelho.
David and Elisabeth Capel have put more than three thousand trees and shrubs back into the property, and the returning woodland now draws the endangered Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater. No tasting fee is published, so ask when you arrange it. The doors open Friday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm, and any other day by appointment. It is a quiet, conservation-minded stop for people who would rather talk to the growers than work a busy bar, and one of the few places you can taste a wine picked by the family whose name is on the label.
