Montebello Estate is a small Pokolbin winery run by a family with Sicilian roots, named for San Giovanni Montebello in the province of Catania. The plantings are unusual for the Hunter: Vermentino and Orange Muscat sit alongside Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sangiovese, and the Bianco blends the first two.
Tastings are $10 for up to six pours, booked online, and run about an hour with a maximum of six people at a time, so it is a slower, more personal stop than most on McDonalds Road. It opens Friday and Saturday to 4pm and Sunday to 2pm, is wheelchair accessible and is for guests aged eighteen and over. The same family runs food and wine tours and cooks Italian catering from its La Casalinga kitchen, so the Sicilian thread runs through more than the wine. If the alternative whites interest you, the Vermentino is worth the booking.
