Wandin Valley Estate on Wilderness Road pours Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz made by Liz Silkman, with a $10 tasting and cheese and salami platters alongside. The cellar door opens at weekends only, 10am to 3pm, so a trip needs planning around it, and groups of eight or more should book ahead.
The estate is as much a place to stay and gather as a cellar door: there are vineyard villas and country cottages, one of them Tuscan-inspired, and a cricket pitch that gets pressed into service for weddings. It sits in the quieter Lovedale pocket rather than the Pokolbin cluster, so a weekend visit can take in the other Wilderness and Lovedale Road cellar doors on a short drive. The weekend-only hours are the thing to plan around: this is not a stop you can slot into a Tuesday.
