Eagles Rest is a family-run label making small-batch wine from one vineyard: Maluna, a parcel high in the foothills of the Brokenback range bought in 2006 and planted to fifty-year-old Chardonnay, Semillon and Syrah. The name comes from the wedge-tailed eagles already nesting there.
Tasting happens at a mobile cellar door set up on the vineyard itself, Friday to Sunday afternoons only, from 1pm to 4pm, which makes this an afternoon stop rather than a morning one, and one to confirm before you drive out. The vineyard is farmed with limited machinery and a lot of hand work. No tasting price is published, so call ahead. It is about as far from a polished cellar door as the Hunter gets: a glass poured among old vines by the people who grow them, with the range in front of you.
