Mercer's cellar door is a newer arrival on Hermitage Road, set in the vines at number 972, and Aaron Mercer's alternative varieties are what make the drive up worth it. The standard tasting runs eight wines drawn from the Hunter, Hilltops, the Central Ranges and Orange, poured with local accompaniments.
The $35 Top Shelf flight starts on the core range then opens the limited releases with Binnorie cheese, and is often hosted by Aaron or Alison themselves. Aaron works in organic and preservative-free styles, all vegan-friendly, so the range does not look like anyone else's on this road. The cellar door opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, with bookings recommended, and children and dogs are welcome. Entry tastings start at $10, and if you have had your fill of Semillon and Shiraz, this is a good place to reset.
