Stonehurst Cedar Creek is a 550-acre family property on Wollombi Road between Wollombi and Millfield, at the southern end of the wine country and off the Pokolbin circuit entirely. The vines went in in 1995 on land that had been cattle and orchard for five generations, and they are farmed organically: no insecticide, only organically approved fungicide, hand pruning and companion cropping.
Tasting happens in a sandstone cellar door, and the range runs from the Storyteller Semillon to the Autumn Harvest Chambourcin, with a Pinot Noir and a Muscat in between. No tasting price is published, so ask at the door. It opens Thursday to Monday, with Tuesday and Wednesday by appointment, which suits the quieter corner of the region it sits in. Seven self-contained cottages sit among the vines with verandahs, spa baths and log fires, if you would rather not drive back over the range.
