Millbrook Estate sits about a kilometre and a half along Mount View Road out of Millfield, on the Wollombi Valley Wine Trail, with the vineyard looking down over Wollombi Brook. The hillside blocks of Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc went in during 1996 and are hand-picked and processed in the winery on site. Sparkling is made here by the traditional method and laid down for up to eight years in an underground cellar dug into an old quarry, which needs no power to hold its temperature.
There is also a working still: Millbrook is one of the few Australian producers still making brandy, currently a seven-year-old, alongside ginger, orange, lemon and aniseed liqueurs. The range takes in Verdelho, Muscat and a Pinot Noir as well. Tastings run seven days, 10am to 5pm, with no set price published on the site, and small groups can book the tasting room privately. The vineyard is farmed partly organic.
