Hanging Tree

Hanging Tree pours in a converted cow shed on forty acres at Pokolbin, and the tasting is the cheap part of the visit: $10 for 45 minutes across sparkling, white, red, sweet and fortified wines, with estate olives, tapenades and oil off 300 trees alongside.

Bring the children and the dog, because both are expected here: there are resident dogs, chickens and guinea fowl, a treasure hunt and giant chess to keep a family busy. Live jazz plays every Sunday, and the heritage Blacksmith's Cottage, the koi pond and the rose garden are all open to wander. The four-bedroom homestead on the property sleeps eight if you want to stay. It opens daily, 10am to 5pm, closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. It is one of the more genuinely family-friendly cellar doors in the valley, built to fill an afternoon rather than a quick flight.
