Established1996

Iron Gate was a paddock until Roger Lilliott planted Semillon, Verdelho and Shiraz on it in 1996, and the cellar door he built is the reason to come: Spanish roof and floor tiles, hand-painted tiles by John Cliff, a marble tasting bench and the wrought-iron gates the estate is named for. The range has grown to take in Tempranillo and Albarino alongside the Hunter staples.

Standard tastings are $20 for six wines over about 45 minutes, with $10 coming off a purchase. On weekdays at 2pm you can add a short walk through the working winery with a member of the team, which is unusual to get at this size. The cellar door opens daily, 10am to 4pm, and a booking is worth it for the courtyard. At the top of the vineyard, Iron Gate House sleeps a large group across seven bedrooms, with a barbecue courtyard and an 11-metre pool looking over the vines.
