Wombat Crossing is one of Pokolbin's smallest wine families, working a single vineyard planted in 1996 on Hermitage Road that made its first vintage in 2005. It only releases a wine when the team judges the year good enough, so the range stays short: Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, a rose, two sparklings and the Classic Wombat blend.
The tasting is seated, unhurried and runs about 45 minutes for $10 a head, with the cellar door looking over the vines towards the Barrington Tops in the distance. Half the tasting fee, plus a share of wine sales, goes to Cedar Creek Wombat Rescue and Hospital, so the $10 does some work beyond the glass. It opens Friday to Sunday, the room caps at eight, and groups over four should book. It is an unhurried, small-family stop rather than a big-name one, and the wombat cause is a genuine reason to spend here rather than up the road.
